Modern Definition of Literacy
"Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning to enable an individual to achieve his or her goals, to develop his or her knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in the wider society."
Literacy Now! is both a message and an approach.
THE MESSAGE
All the pieces are in place - right now - to raise Literacy levels anywhere in the world. The only meaningful barrier to success is a lack of understanding that such a thing is possible. The teachers needed to facilitate 21st Century skillsets are ready, willing and able. The course content is available and affordable. The technology to deliver such course content is available and affordable.
THE APPROACH
The Global Literacy Foundation's 'Literacy Now!' campaign follows a straightforward methodology:
- Identify Literacy Projects & Initiatives
- Ensure that such Projects & Initiatives meet our criteria for success
- Bring public awareness and funding to these well qualified Projects & Initiatives
