Open Source + Commodity

Open Source Software = Commodity.

A commodity is something required for an organization to exist or compete, that adds no differentiating value.

In the absence of a monopoly, an abundent item that everyone needs becomes less expensive as economies of scale come into play. In the presence of a monopoly, economies of scale do not apply.
